What did you get done today?

Made a batch of soap, listed some stuff on my site, dragged a few things around, and got some partz for holiday gifts.

Not much, but at least it's something.

Cleaned the apartment - including some organization - and mopped the floors. Everything is clean and nice.

I am going to put the clean sheets on the bed and take a really scrubby shower, and go to bed in a clean bed, in a clean apartment, with a clean self. It's my favorite part of the weekend.

I also recycled a bunch of bottles from my birthday party and got groceries. And tightened the screws on my bed's legs. (Which sounds like I had more fun than I did this week...)

This was not a relaxing day off, but I feel so much better when things are in order and passably clean.

*Laundry
*vacuuming
* made sloppy joes mix
* baked banana bread
* cleaned stove top, fridge top, and ran a lint roller on my dusty shades--Brilliant!
* wiped down table surfaces
* took dog to romp
* went to food co-op
* selected and arranged a bouquet of cut dried garden end bits
* washed my hair
* bribed boyfriend to buy wine for the week
* lesson plans for V
* had car washed (lovely!)
* put new stories on writing site
* put away about 30 tiny little things which had not found a home in a while
* moved plants
* took out trash & recycling

Phew.

I cleaned almost the entire living room top-to-bottom last week (the one exception was the overcrowded bookcase which will just have to stay overcrowded until we get another bookshelf). I organized the various types of video and audio recordings, figured out a more sensible arrangement for the laptops, and even wiped down the power strips (while they were off, of course, and with an approved cleaner). I flipped the futon and put fresh coverings on it. I got rid of approximately six pounds of junk mail from the hall rack and my desk, too.

I had a nice productive day yesterday. I did all my grocery shopping in between work and going running. I did a good, hard, interval training session with my running group,then got home and cooked a curry and cake for my bookclub tonight. Right now, the dahl to accompany the curry is on the stove so when I get home this evening all I need to do is set out the nibbles, heat everything up and I'm set.

Sleep. Major post jet-lag crash, followed by a nice vegetable-y dinner. I feel better than I have in weeks.

Also unpacked and dropped off laundry, in the efficiency category. But I consider the sleep a major accomplishment.

Not a super productive day, but I did some things I'd had on my list for a while--canceled web hosting; put plastic on windows (half-done); got rid of some digital garbage (Classmates account); raked out front; traded some fall wear for winter wear; walked some dogs.

That's enough for a day off.

We found the perfect new bedside tables. They are actually video/CD storage towers from IKEA, but they fit perfectly in our narrow bedroom, and the open design means they can organize all our charger cables and still offer space for books, the laptop, and our house slippers. I can't wait to get them installed. They also cost about $60 less than the books shelves we had intended to buy.

I packed up the one box I need to send for holidays and mailed it at the self-serve machine at the PO, where no one was even in line.

I set up my converter box and found it works now that there is an antenna on the roof. Now I can cancel cable.

I vacuumed up large amounts of dog hair.

I made all the phone calls on my list.

I went to teach a kid but she wasn't home.

Still have to: package up rest of bath bombs, do dishes, go to library (tomorrow).

Went to a bunch of meetings. Lots of drama ensued. In the end, I am not being forced to change anything any more than I already had to do starting in December, so that's a relief. I can basically get pay cutting done by August rather than stringing it out all year starting in March. Okay then.

My annual New Year's Eve cleaning. I'm washing all my bedding and towels, cleaned up my desk last night, just finished dealing with the nightstand and have so far thrown away a ton of junk. Still have to clean the bathroom and the kitchen and vaccuum the living room rug.

I also called my aunt to clear up some misunderstandings we had over Christmas, that have been weighing heavily on me ever since. Mental clutter, also gone.

I had to get up early to drive a friend to the airport. Since then:

* Attended two dogs besides mine
* Magic erasered surfaces
* called student loan company about IBR
* printed out IBR forms & filled them out
* brows & bangs trimmed
* went to consignment shop but it was closed
* shoveled snow
* changed sheets
* put away last of stuff disturbed by landlord's work
* gathered initial stuff for NYC trip and made planning list

Still to do:
* take out trash and recycling
* clean the steps
* call mom
* photocopy tax return for IBR
* replace ink cartridge.

Paid the rent, sent off a cheque to Fedex for the new phones we just got, out to the madness of La Defense for more fleece for the whole family, cleaned my horrible pigsty of a desk, washing, that kind of stuff.
And yet the list seems no shorter than it was.

Changed sheets, revised piece and submitted it to the alumni newsletter, took out trash and recycling, did a social obligation. Now I'm trying to screw up the right mood to call and make an appointment with Planned Parenthood for a birth control visit. (Going to my usual gyn has become too expensive with my current insurance.) I feel weird about it, and rather paralyzed.

I joined The Kitchen Cure yesterday, which was also the first day of the project. I spent a good four or five hours cleaning today, and I'm pretty psyched with how it's coming so far.

This is yesterday:

and this is today:

This week's assignment is to clear out and clean the pantry and fridge. Tomorrow I'm doing the fridge.

Also, I discovered a cupboard I didn't even know was a cupboard, and made it into my recycling area, and took the dog to the park.

This is the sort of thing that happens in my dreams all the time, but when I wake up, my apartment is just as cramped as ever.

Your kitchen is super cute, and you have made huge strides in de-cluttering.

On topic, I managed to do a basic kitchen cleanup and remembered to pull out some meat to defrost and then made a marinade for it so it can go in the crockpot tomorrow. I also did a bunch of bills.

ecaron, your kitchen is looking great!

I love the yellow around the window, and looking at the photos had the thought that painting even just the handles on your cupboards and drawers yellow might draw the room together visually. Just a thought...

I haven't done much lately except cooking. Today, scones and chana saag.

When I was uploading the photos, I wrote in the caption for one of them that it was like discovering another room. I'm fortunate to have a lot of storage in that small kitchen, but it's also a bit of a burden because it makes it easier to shove things away and forget about them. There's no organization. Once I found that cupboard, I started thinking about how I could rearrange the space and use it better, and it just fell in perfectly. It was the most exciting housekeeping moment I think I've ever had. Which is nerdy, but I don't care.

celia, the cupboard handles are actually the same shade of yellow. I know it's hard to tell from the photos, since everything is yellow thanks to the overhead light. I wouldn't mind doing a slightly brighter shade of it, actually, and doing all of the drawer pulls as well. I have all kinds of ideas, now that I can stand to look at it again.

This week and weekend have been all about unpacking and trying to fit a whole other person's stuff in where I already have all my stuff. It's coming along - and has obviously meant quite a few trips to the trash and Goodwill.

I actually managed to consolidate a full pantry and a full kitchen table of pantry stuff the other day. But I did feel a bit desperate for a while.

Today: More fitting in of stuff.

Yesterday was an Ikea marathon. Kids needed 'stuff' to complete their rooms so today I have:

Made pancakes for breakfast
Assembled 3 desks; 3 chairs and 2 book-cases
Put up two shelves and 2 wall clocks
Chucked out one bed and moved another from Room A to Room B
Cooked sausage, egg, toast and beans for lunch
Took/collected Ally to/from the livery yard
Roasted a pork joint for dinner
Explained to Isaac the difference between weight and mass

I now have to iron three sets of school uniforms.............

At about 1 this morning, I mixed up some 'no knead' bread dough and set it inside my oven to rise overnight, then baked a delicious loaf when I got up. I also did some job searching, called my old boss about the tax paperwork I got in the mail today that was really over-calculated and had a good talk with her at the same time. I took the dog for a couple of walks, showered, figured out my bills and discovered that I might actually come out ahead on them, started making plans for a kitchen herb garden and enjoyed the sunny day.

I've been feeling kind of down this week, so today has been an improvement.
